My background is in Policing, where I have spent most of my working life. This amazing career has taught me so much about people, leadership, and facing life's toughest moments head-on. Crisis management, diversity, effective communication—these weren't just skills; they became second nature. Mental health challenges became a huge part of my working day. Their complexities shaped my understanding and empathy, adding depth to how I approach wellness today.
I have always enjoyed participating in sports and spent much of my youth and into my 30's playing Squash, Running and taking part in Aerobics classes (Yes I am part of the Jane Fonda era......). I only discovered lifting weights in my mid 40's. I always had a fear of not wanting to get 'bulky' or look 'manly'. Oh my goodness how wrong was I!! My body is in the best shape it has ever been, by building muscle and getting stronger. I have competed in Powerlifting and CrossFit and loved it and the passion remains on pushing myself, being curious and keeping myself accountable. I now enjoy a mix of Powerlifting, Olympic Lifting and CrossFit style training.
However it was not like this back in my early 40’s when peri-menopausal symptoms hit me BIG time…… I did not experience the ‘usual’ symptoms of hot flushes and sweats, but had very random symptoms of acne, itchy skin, allergies and gut issues. I also developed brain fog, forgetfulness, and did think I was suffering from early onset dementia. It was only when I was in my late 40’s (49 to be precise!) that I heard the word peri-menopause and learned re the many many symptoms relating to this and the penny finally dropped. After doing my own research and having many discussions with friends and work colleagues, did I eventually seek out medical help to obtain HRT. I have been and still am on a journey with my treatment to get to a good place with my hormones. I am so grateful for all the work now to highlight menopause and make it more mainstream, rather than sweeping it under the carpet and talking in whispers.
Since retiring I have transferred my passion of working with and helping people, to becoming qualified as a Personal Trainer & Nutrition Coach. I have also completed further studies and am an accredited Mindfulness Coach as well as a certified Menopause Support Coach. I am undergoing further studies to become a certified MNU Nutritionist.
One of the main reasons I decided to get myself educated and qualified as a Menopause Support Coach, was to be able to support other ladies who are lost, upset, confused with what is going on with their bodies and minds.
The important aspect of all of this, is learning more about the female anatomy, what works/what doesn’t, where we have evidence to back this up (my policing head will always be present!!) and working with every body as the beautiful unique beings that we are.
